Rainy-Day Date Ideas in New Zealand and Australia (and What to Wear on Your Feet)

Rain doesn't have to cancel a date. Across New Zealand and Australia there are plenty of good indoor (and one or two properly damp outdoor) options: late-night museums, a heritage cinema, an aquarium, a covered food market, a seafood cooking class and a tropical glasshouse. Below are 12 ideas across Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, plus a few honest notes on what to wear so you arrive looking good and dry.

Date night, forecast rain, plans unchanged.

Auckland

1. Twilight Tuesday at Auckland Museum, then the Wintergardens

Auckland Museum in the Domain stays open until 8:30pm every Tuesday, with the whole building open to wander and the galleries usually quieter (Auckland Unlimited). Go earlier in the afternoon and you can duck across to the Domain Wintergardens: two restored, barrel-vaulted Victorian glasshouses that reopened in 2023 and are full of rare plants (OurAuckland). Check the Wintergardens' hours before you go, as they close earlier than the museum's late night.

2. SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's

On Tāmaki Drive, about ten minutes' drive from the city centre, Kelly Tarlton's has what it calls the world's largest sub-Antarctic penguin colony display and New Zealand's largest collection of sharks (Auckland Unlimited). Watching penguins zip past while rain hits the harbour outside is a very good date.

Wellington

3. Te Papa

Te Papa on Cable Street is open 10am–6pm every day except Christmas Day, with six floors covering nature, Māori and Pacific stories and the national art collection, plus two cafés (Te Papa). Pick one floor each, meet in the middle for coffee, compare favourites.

4. A film at the Embassy

The Embassy on Kent Terrace dates from 1924 and is a Category 1 Historic Place (Heritage New Zealand). Today it runs as an Event Cinemas venue with the historic 1920s Grand auditorium and a smaller Deluxe cinema built into the old orchestra pit, right across from the Courtenay Place transport hub (Event Cinemas).

Christchurch

5. Riverside Market

Beside the Bridge of Remembrance on Oxford Terrace, Riverside Market is an indoor food hall with more than 60 stalls and food outlets in its Farmers Market Hall, with shops, cafés and bars in the lanes alongside (Christchurch City Council Newsline). Split a few small plates and keep moving.

6. Christchurch Art Gallery on a Wednesday night

The glass-fronted gallery on Montreal Street holds one of the country's most important public art collections and opens until 9pm on Wednesdays (ChristchurchNZ). Pair it with dinner at Riverside, a short walk away.

Sydney

7. Art Gallery of New South Wales, Wednesday late

The gallery's two buildings, Naala Nura and Naala Badu, sit in the Domain overlooking the harbour and stay open until 10pm on Wednesdays (Art Gallery of NSW). Rainy harbour views from inside are underrated.

8. Cook together at Sydney Seafood School

At Sydney Fish Market, classes start with a live demo in a tiered auditorium, then you cook the dishes at a shared bench and eat what you made. The school literally pitches it as "Date night, sorted!" Bookings are non-refundable, so check the reschedule terms (Sydney Fish Market).

Melbourne

9. ACMI at Fed Square

ACMI's exhibition The Story of the Moving Image is hands-on: animate shadows, build optical toys and make soundscapes in a Foley studio. There are cinemas in the same building, so you can roll straight into a film (Fed Square).

10. Block Arcade and The Tea Rooms 1892

The Tea Rooms in the Block Arcade on Collins Street have been serving since 1892 as the original Hopetoun Tea Rooms, and are on the Victorian Heritage Register (City of Melbourne). Bookings are available online, which helps on a wet Saturday.

11. Sherbrooke Falls, with care

If you both like a damp, green walk, Parks Victoria describes the Sherbrooke area of the Dandenong Ranges as "a fantastic rainforest of spectacular Mountain Ash, stringybark, lush tree ferns", and notes the falls and lyrebirds are often at their best after rain (Parks Victoria). Be honest with yourselves: the park closes during severe weather, conditions change at short notice and tracks get muddy. Check closures first, go after the rain rather than during a storm, and wear proper walking footwear.

Brisbane

12. QAGOMA, or the Mt Coot-tha dome and planetarium

The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art sit side by side at South Bank, and GOMA houses the Australian Cinémathèque, which opens from 5:30pm on Wednesdays and Fridays for films (QAGOMA). Alternatively, head to Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha: the Tropical Display Dome (9am–4pm daily) is full of heliconias, palms and aroids, and the Australian Rainforest Trail is right there for a short walk when the rain eases (Brisbane City Council). The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is in the same gardens (Brisbane City Council).

What to wear on your feet (looking good, staying dry)

Most of these dates involve a dash from the car or tram stop, a few puddles, then hours indoors. That's where a clean, minimal waterproof sneaker earns its place: it looks at home with jeans, chinos or a dress, doesn't squelch across a gallery floor, and you're not stuck in damp socks through dinner.

We make Oszea, so take this with that in mind. Our Tasman Essentials and Urban Essentials are waterproof everyday sneakers built with ZEA-TEX 4-layer construction: a breathable knit outer, a waterproof membrane, a flexible elastomer layer and a soft lining. They're designed for rain, puddles and wet grass, are lightweight and vegan-friendly, and wipe clean afterwards.

The honest limits: they're not for wading or full submersion, and they're not hiking boots. For a muddy rainforest track like Sherbrooke, a proper trail shoe is the better tool (see our hiking and trail shoe guide). And if your shoes do get soaked, here's how to dry wet shoes without damaging them.

FAQ

What's a good last-minute rainy date in a NZ or Australian city?

A late-opening gallery or museum is the easiest: Auckland Museum on Tuesdays, Christchurch Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of NSW on Wednesdays. Some exhibitions are ticketed, so check the venue's website before you go.

Is it safe to do a rainforest walk in the rain?

It can be lovely just after rain, but check the park's alerts first. Parks Victoria, for example, closes the Dandenong Ranges during severe weather. Avoid walking in storms or strong winds, and stick to marked tracks.

What should I wear on a rainy date?

Smart-casual layers, a compact umbrella or rain jacket, and shoes that won't show water marks or leave you with wet socks. A clean waterproof sneaker works with most outfits.

Can I wear waterproof sneakers to dinner?

Yes, at most casual and smart-casual places. A minimal, single-colour pair reads as a regular sneaker, not outdoor gear.

Are waterproof sneakers hot to wear indoors?

A breathable membrane helps a lot. We explain why in are waterproof shoes breathable?
